Origin:
Arras.
Provenance:
The Augustinian abbey of Mont-Saint-Eloi, near Arras: inscribed '82 Bibliotheca monasterii montis Sti Eligii' (f. 1r).
George Bellot, abbot of Mont-Saint-Eloi-lez-Arras, 1576-1587 (see Gallia Christiana, 16 vols (Paris: Ex typographia regia, and others, 1716-1865), III (1725), 431): inscribed 'D. D. Georgius Bellot abbas hujus monasterii dignus' (f. 411v); given to Mailliet.
(Abbot?) Ludovicus Mailliet, 6 June 1584: inscribed 'hunc librum habuit Ludovicus Mailliet a Domino abbate Montis Sancti Eligii cui inserviebat eidem abbati celeberrim ejudem rei causa in commodum utilitatemque suorum studiorum hanc bibliam ei contulit anno Domini (1584) die vi Junii' (f. 412r). (Note that although there is no mention of a Ludovicus Maillet in the Gallia Christiana, George Bellot nominated his successor, called Ludovicus Ripet Bruxellensis, in March 1584, but he was not accepted by the other brothers of the abbey until the death of George Bellot in 1587).
Adam Clarke, Wesleyan Methodist minister and scholar (b. 1762, d. 1832): his sale, 20 June 1836, lot 482, supposed to have been bought by Cochrane for £10; however, nearly everything from Clarke's sale was bought by Baynes and Son, including presumably the present Bible which was offered in Baynes' subsequent catalogue of 1836 as item 4 for £14.14 s.
William Bragge (b. 1823, d. 1884), civil engineer, steel manufacturer and collector: his sale, 7 June 1876, lot 336, bought by Quaritch for £250 (noted by Sydney Cockerell on note pasted to f. [i], 15 July 1912).
John Ruskin, art critic (b. 1819, d. 1900): his collection (see J. S. Dearden, John Ruskin, the Collector, with a Catalogue of the Illuminated and other Manuscripts formely in his Collection (London: Bibliographical Society, 1966), no. 15 p. 134, pl. IV); his sale, London, 13 May 1902; bought by Yates Thompson.
Henry Yates Thompson (b. 1838, d. 1928), collector of illuminated manuscripts and newspaper proprietor: with his book-plate inscribed '[MS] lxxvii / £nee.e.e [i.e. £500.0.0] / [bought from] W: …(?) / (Ruskin) / May 13 / 1902' (inside upper cover).
Bequeathed to the British Museum in 1941 by Mrs Henry Yates Thompson.
