- Contains papers relating to the British arts festival held in New York in 1983 to mark the bicentenary of the signing of the peace treaty to end the American War of Independence. The Poetry Society’s contribution, in conjunction with Artscope Ltd, was 'Live Poetry in Britain Today', the broadcasting of recorded poetry in 16 areas in Prospect Park, transmitted via headphones given to visitors. Includes programme details; a press release; details of the festival committee members and directors; notes and correspondence relating to the organisation of the broadcasts, including correspondence relating to permission to use recordings of the poetry; an outline of the poets to be broadcast in categories such as ‘Contemporaries’, ‘Scottish and Irish Poets’, ‘Women Poets’, and ‘Alternatives’; notes on relevant holdings of the National Sound Archive; press cuttings; photographs of the 1983 event; and background material on Artscope, including photographs of a 1982 installation in the National Mall, Washington D.C. Also includes permission forms signed by, amongst others, Dannie Abse, Fleur Adcock, John Ashberry, John Betjeman, Charles Causley, Maureen Duffy, Douglas Dunn, Alison Fell, John Fuller, David Gascoyne, Tony Harrison, Mick Imlah, Linton Kwesi Johnson, R. D. Laing, Norman MacCaig, Edwin Morgan, Paul Muldoon, Grace Nichols, Tom Paulin, Craig Raine, Christopher Reid, Carol Rumens, Diana Scott, Valerie Sinason, Anthony Thwaite, and Heathcote Williams.
