- Custodial History:
-
Origin:
Netherlands, Southern.
Provenance:
At some point in the manuscript’s history, its first folio (and perhaps more) went missing. This folio would have contained the opening words of Psalm 1, ‘Beatus Vir’, and would doubtless have contained a historiated initial. In order to provide the manuscript with a colourful opening, the folio containing the opening of Psalm 97 (‘Cantate domino canticum novum’) was moved to the beginning, now foliated as f. 1*. This folio was moved at some time after the manuscript was foliated in pencil in the bottom right hand corner: f. 172 is missing from the foliated sequence, and this number has been erased and overwritten with f. 1*. This rearrangement was perhaps undertaken when the manuscript was bound in its current binding, which has been given pastedowns from a 14th-century Italian manuscript. Perhaps these were re-used from its earlier binding, but they might also have been taken from a cutting or some other binding.Henry Yates Thompson (b. 1838, d. 1928), collector of illuminated manuscripts and newspaper proprietor: with his book-plate inscribed '£ree.e.e [i.e. £200.0.0] / [bought from] Maggs / Nov 1924' (inside upper cover).
Bequeathed to the British Museum in 1941 by Mrs Henry Yates Thompson.
