This manuscript contains a copy of a Latin treatise known as De moribus (On customs), written by William of Auvergne (b. 1180/90, d. 1249), a French theologian and philosopher who served as Bishop of Paris from 1228 until his death. The text represents the second part of his De virtutibus et vitiis (On Virtues and Vices).

Decoration:
10 historiated initials, arranged in two registers, one for the representation of the virtues and the other for the vices, with decorated extensions into the margins, in colours and gold (ff. 1r, 5v, 13r, 32r, 51r, 61v, 67r, 108r, 115r, 114r).
Smaller initials in blue with red (and blue) pen-flourishing. Small initials plain in red or blue.
Foliation in red roman numbers and running-titles in red ink added in a 15th-century hand.

f. 5v: Timor Dei and Innocentia.
f. 13r: Spes and Desperatio.
f. 32r: Castitas and Luxuria (the text refers to Caritas).
f. 51r: Humilitas and Superbia.

f. 67r: Oboedentia and Contumacia.
f. 108r: Paupertas and Aviditas.
f. 115r: Caritas and Avaritia.
f. 142r: Prudentia and Stultitia.

John Thomas Barber Beaumont (b. 1774, d. 1841), artist and founder of insurance offices: his stamp (f. 1r); probably given to the New Philosophical Institution, founded shortly before his death.
