Edward Upward: Journal (1962)
- Scope & Content:
-
Hard covered notebook ('Vol XXXI'), containing entries from July to December 1962.
With a letter (25 October) and envelope, found loosely inserted in the notebook, from 'Jane', who has just read In the Thirties (1962). The letter is addressed to Upward c/o his publishers, William Heinemann.
'Jane' is Shirley Munro - see Add MS 89002/2/1 for Upward's letters to her of an earlier date (1932-37). In Upward's novel, the character 'Peg' is modelled on 'Jane'. In the letter, after noting the characterisation of 'Peg' as 'a bright amoral girl' by the reviewer for the Sunday Times, 'Jane' observes: 'I thought you dealt in a very perfunctory manner with that Peg. Pray pardon my impertinence.' The letter concludes with the hope that they might, with the approval of Upward's wife, meet again: 'Now that I'm 51 & a grandmother twice over, I'm ever so harmless and well-meaning! And I would like to see you & talk & hear your news. Do ring or write.'
On the identification of 'Peg' as Shirley Munro, see Alan Walker, 'Edward Upward in the Nineteen-Thirties' (2003), in Add MS 89002/5/5.
