- Edward Upward: Outlines for Various Talks
- Scope & Content:
-
Notes and texts for talks given by Upward, as follows:
1. 'Modern Poetry' (10 sheets autograph numbered 1-9, with a sheet 7a). The paper has been annotated at the head of the first page by Upward at a later date: 'Read to the Masters' Discussion Society at Alleyn's in 1933 after a drink with J H G Pell in the Half Moon'. Upward discusses and reads from the poetry of T. S. Eliot, D. H. Lawrence and W. H. Auden.
2. 'Marxism & Literature' (10 sheets numbered 1-9 with an inserted sheet of poetry). The date and the occasion of the talk are not indicated, although physical appearance and content suggest the 1930s decade. It includes, as a typed insertion, a poem by Wilfred Owen ('The Send-Off'). See also Upward, 'Sketch for a Marxist Interpretation of Literature' in C. Day Lewis (ed.) The Mind in Chains: Socialism and the Cultural Revolution (1937), pp. 41-55.
3. An exercise book containing a 'Talk to be given to teachers & Sixth Formers at County Hall on Oct 8 1969'. The subject of the talk is 'to show [the] connection between writing & experience, how I came to write what I did'.
4. An exercise book containing the texts for the following:
- 'Talk to be given at the Wolverhampton Polytechnic on 6th Jan 1970' (discusses writers of the 1930s);
- 'Marxism-Leninism and Imaginative Literature (A talk to be given on the Sociology course of the Open University, 1972)';
- 'Preliminary notes for talk on Social Class to be given to Unisoc on Sept 6 1973';
- 'Talk to be given to Unisoc on Oct 16, 1973' (a continuation of the previous talk);
- 'Revolution. A brief introduction to discussion. Unisoc Nov 23 1977';
- at the back of the exercise book: 'General outline of talk on art & political propaganda'.
