- Description: San Julián is a port in the Argentinean province of Santa Cruz. The envelope contains information on this port and town in poor conditions—the National School that lacked its own building and functioned in three houses. Portuguese adventurer Hernán Magallanes gave the port its name in 1520 and the port was funded in 1783 by the Spaniards by royal decree. The envelope also contains information on natural catastrophes such as fire, tornadoes, and pests that the port endured as well as its economic activities such as cattle breeding, mining, and the exportation of wool and frozen meet. During the 1930s, it became a place of confinement for radical politicians. This envelope contains photographs, newspapers’ and magazines’ articles and clippings, engravings, and typewritten documents. Extent of original: Envelope.
