- Title:
- Rosas Juan Manuel [1890s-1950s]
- Scope & Content:
- Description: This envelope refers to Juan Manuel de Rosas (1793 - 1877). Rosas was a wealthy land owner with a charismatic leadership among the rural workers (or gauchos). He invaded the indigenous land and kept many territories for himself, his family and friends. As soon as he became a successful politician, he assumed the governorship of Buenos Aires in 1829. It was a difficult time for Argentina with the civil war between unitarios and federales that came to an end due to Rosas' autocratic rule.; He still is a highly polemic figure in national history and has been accused of extreme cruelty due to his so called death squads, the Mazorca. Rosas faced national and international opposition until the year 1851 when, the landowners (or estancieros) who had supported his rule, rose against him. Their leader was Justo Jose de Urquiza, from the province of Entre Ríos, who defeated Rosas in the battle of Caseros. Rosas fled to England where he died in 1877 in Southampton. This handmade envelope contains newspapers’ and magazines’ articles and clippings, engravings, and two books on Rosas, one from 1939 and the other from 1934. For more information see, Halperín Donghi, Tulio, Revolución y guerra. Formación de una elite dirigente en la Argentina criolla, (Buenos Aires: Siglo XXI, 2005). Extent of original: Handmade envelope . Condition of original: Regular to bad condition.
