- Author: John Damaskin. Description: Orthodox liturgical book, contains hymns, divided by 8 “voices” (types of singing). A method of recording of musical text with hooks has Byzantine roots. It appeared in Russia with the adoption of Christianity. It still remains to the present day, and it’s widely used by Russian Old Believers. Hook books are usually brightly decorated. This Oktoikh has original decor, designed in an eclectic style with significant elements of the so-called “Guslitsky” style developed by the Old Believers, who lived in Moscow region.. Extent and format of original material: One bound volume containing 120 pages, 425mm x 275mm. The condition of the book is good. The restoration of folios and binding was made. Binding consists of two wooden covers, covered with embossed leather. 2 locks on the upper cover. Clasps lost on the lower cover. Filigree: 1 (J WHATMAN TURKEY Mill 1829), f. 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 17, 18, 19, 20, 29, 30, 31, 32, 37, 38, 39, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 52, 53, 54, 60, 62, 63, 68, 69, 70, 75, 76, 77, 78, 83, 84, 85, 90, 92, 93, 94, 95, 99, 100, 101, 106, 107, 108.
