- Title:
- Michael Goldstein: Prose by Harold Pinter
- Scope & Content:
-
Ten items.
- 1. 'Kullus'. Original black carbon typescript (2 sheets), together with two copies (2 sheets + 2 sheets) prepared more recently. Published in Various Voices (2009), where it is dated 1949.
- 2. 'A Note on Shakespeare'. Original black carbon typescript (3 sheets). Published in Various Voices, where it is dated 1950.
- 3. 'Latest Reports from the Stock Exchange'. Photocopy of the original text (2 sheets), and a copy of the revised text (2 sheets) as published in Various Voices where it is dated 1953. The revised text (word-processed) is dated 1952; however, this is misleading since (aside from the 1952/53 date discrepancy) Pinter's revision, in which 'Kikes' and other Jewish references were changed to 'Reds' and to 'Wall Street', was made much later. For the text as first sent to Goldstein, see Add MS 89083/1/1/1. For Pinter's reference to his subsequent revision, see Pinter to Goldstein (4 January 1997), and see also Goldstein's approving reply (21 January 1997), both of which are in Add MS 89083/1/1/7.
- 4. 'The Examination'. Original blue carbon typescript (4 sheets). Published in Various Voices, where it is dated 1955.
- 5. 'Vanishing Point' (1 sheet), a dialogue with Goldstein's later word-processed copy (1 sheet) which is prefaced by the comment: 'By Harold Pinter as given to Mick Goldstein sometime in the nineteen fifties.'
- 6. 'A Day at Lord's'. Original black carbon typescript (2 sheets), appears to have been typed in the 1950s.
- 7. 'Hutton and the Past'. Title-page inscription: 'To Mick from Harold'. Title-page and pp. [1]-5. Retained in soft black covers. Published in Various Voices, where it is dated 1969.
- 8. 'Girls', dated July 1995. Photocopy typescript (3 sheets). The final sheet has an Australian address on the verso, in Goldstein's hand. Published in Various Voices.
- 9. 'Tess', 1 August 2000. Word-processed (2 sheets), with Harold Pinter compliment slip. Published in Various Voices.
- 10. 'Voices in the Tunnel'. Word processed (1 sheet), with autograph message card from Pinter (7 August 2001): 'Here's a little piece. New York was - what can I say - a triumph. Woolf had a great success. Don't drop a goolie. Love / Harold.' Text published in Various Voices.
