- Title:
- Lee Harwood: Letters Received (Evans, Paul)
- Scope & Content:
-
18 communications from Paul Evans.
- (1). 5 April 1965. Typed note referring to Eleventh Finger (ed. Evans).
- (2). 10 September 1967. Autograph letter (1 plain card), requesting poems for Eleventh Finger. 'I don't know when Montgomery's doing your book, but some unpublished ones from that would be nice.' Hopes to see Harwood when he reads in Brighton.
- (3). 3 April 1969. Autograph postcard (Dolgellau, Wales). 'We live to the left of the postcard a mile or two, up about 1000 feet'.
- (4). Brightlingsea, Essex. 16 April 1971. Autograph letter (University of Essex headed paper, 1 sheet), with envelope. 'Are you still interested in a Voiceprint edition of your Tzara work?'
- (5). Hove, Sussex, 19 December 1972. Autograph aerogramme, addressed to Lee Walker in Boston, Mass. 'I've picked up correspondence with Doug Oliver again [...]'.
- (6). Brighton, 21 May 1972. Typed aerogramme, addressed to Harwood at Aegean School of Fine Arts, Paros. 'The "gentleman" on the cover of February [Evans, February, Fulcrum Press, 1971] is someone who just happened to get in the way of the photograph taken of me in the park [....] I must say I find the whole thing a little too "Liverpudlian" if you see what I mean.' Evans has just applied (with support from Eric Mottram) for an Arts Council grant ('if Barry MacSweeney can do it [...]'). Interested in being considered for Harwood's post on Paros. Reading Stendhal, Paul Bowles, James Agee.
- (7). Paris/Brighton, 9 February 1973 (postmark). Typed letter (Paris hotel headed paper, 1 sheet), enclosing 'Five Pages from an Unfinished Poem' (6 sheets) and 'Eye-Music for Rene Magritte' (1 sheet). With air mail envelope addressed to Boston.
- (8). Hove, 17 February 1973. Autograph aerogramme, addressed to Harwood in Boston. 'Please do NOT use the work I sent you. I'm in the middle of a bunch of new poems (love poems) I will let you have very soon. They are good - very straight and ... well, good.' Evans is re-reading Frank O'Hara, Odes (1960) - 'What a book!'
- (9). Hove, 26 February 1973. Typed letter (2 sheets), with air mail envelope addressed to Boston. Letter confirming that his new work is what he would like to see in print first, some of which was originally enclosed with the letter. He is struggling to complete 'the last section of the prose' previously mentioned, finding prose difficult to write (although the bulk of the letter is an exuberant evocation of Hove on a 'windy sunny day'). Reading George Oppen, Seascape: Needle's Eye - 'it's luminous, absolutely marvellous'. Further request to see (completed) 'The Long Black Veil'.
- (10). Hove, 24 May 1973. Autograph aerogramme, addressed to Harwood in Boston. 'Received EAGLE with thanks' [The Boston Eagle, April 1973, ed. Corbett Harwood and Warsh]. 'Disappointed you're not using the poem "How slowly...".' Remarks that Harwood's work seems to be in transition: 'I can only see where the joins are, and not the entire thing' - hasn't yet seen 'The Long Black Veil'.
- (11). Folding leaflet for The Poetry Society (21 Earls Court Square), listing events for September-December 1973. Marked with a cross: Paul Evans and D M Thomas (19 October), Roy Fisher (22 October), Jeff Nuttall (26 November), Harry Guest and Tony Harrison (30 November).
- (12). Algeria, 12 April 1974. Autograph postcard.
- 13. New York, 14 January 1975. Autograph aerogramme, addressed to Harwood in Hove. Letter includes a poem ('The Polish Rider').
- (14). [1975]. Undated note (with envelope) acknowledging receipt of H.M.S. Little Fox.
- (15). Oswestry, Shropshire, 20 August 1979 (postmark). Autograph postcard.
- (16). Liverpool, 14 November 1980. Autograph postcard.
- (17). Liverpool, 18 December 1980. Autograph letter (2 sheets).
- (18). Liverpool, 27 December 1980. Autograph letter (1 sheet).
