'Friday last, I drove Peter [Bailey] and Geoff Ward a couple of hundred miles round the bookshops of North Wales, where some pickings were made - but no Jocelyn [Brooke], I'm afraid, or Denton.'
- (2). Liverpool, 8 March 1987. Autograph letter (1 sheet). 'I popped over to Todmorden on Friday to check the page-proofs of my book [The Sofa Book]. It looks excellent - and the drawings have reproduced very well. So, by late April a copy should waft through your letter-box.'

'Meanwhile, on to Orchid Land [...] Many thanks for your Selected - it's a terrific collection; and I'm very touched by the dedication. The feeling's totally mutual!'

Autograph letter (1 sheet): 'we wandered around Bishopsbourne [Kent, home of Jocelyn Brooke] on the Thursday finally, extending our trip by a day - beautiful country there, especially the mysterious drive along tunnelled lanes from "The Dog" to the village itself. And what an elegant Water Tower!' [Woodlands Wood, near Adisham].
