27 communications from Paul Evans (1989-1990, including 5 undated communications from the late 1980s), and several subsequent letters and cards (1991-2010) to Harwood from Rhiannon and Lucy Evans (Paul Evans's first wife and their daughter). Paul Evans died from a fall (January 1991) when climbing with Harwood. A few additional very late letters (1990-1991) from Evans to Harwood can be found in Add MS 88998/7/4, amongst materials gathered for Under the Hill: Memories and Praises of Paul Evans.

- (2). Liverpool, 22 January 1989. Autograph postcard. 'Just visited Ruskin's house on Coniston Water (Brantwood) with a view clear across to the snow-topped Old Man.'
- (3). Chester, 8 February 1989. Autograph letter (1 sheet). Harwood has agreed to be godfather to Evans's (and Nathalie's) new arrival, birth immanent.
- (4). Chester, 19 March 1989. Autograph letter (1 sheet), with a newspaper cutting and a plain card (supplementary communication dated 20 March). 'I enclose the obituary of a stirring fellow [J.B.L. Noel, 1890-1989] built on the Harwood model.' Harwood is now godfather to Cecily.

- (17). 'Tuesday, P.C.L.' (Polytechnic of Central London). Autograph letter (1 sheet). 'I'm afraid I'm going to be rather outstandingly glossy, for a half an hour at least, on Saturday - new boots, new crampons, new gaiters, new ice-axe.'
- (18). 'Sunday'. 'I do hope the Scottish peaks have treated you kindly' (the reference suggests the letter may have been written in October 1987 - see Add MS 88998/2/24, item 13). Letter also refers to Jocelyn Brooke research.
