- Title:
- Lee Harwood: Letters Received (Guest, Harry)
- Scope & Content:
-
15 communications from Harry Guest (two of which, items 8 and 10 below, have been extracted and are Closed until 1 January 2027).
- (1). [?1964]. Undated typed letter (1 sheet), referring to the death of Tristan Tzara (25 December 1963).
- (2). Shoreham-by-Sea, 3 April 1965 (postmark). Undated autograph letter (1 sheet), with envelope.
- (3). Shoreham-by-Sea, 18 April 1965 (postmark). Undated autograph letter (1 sheet), with envelope.
- (4). Tokyo, 13 October [1966]. Autograph letter (1 sheet), with envelope.
- (5). Tokyo, [January 1967], dated by Harwood on envelope. Autograph letter (3 sheets, 3rd sheet Japanese characters), with envelope. Refers to Harwood, The Man with Blue Eyes. 'I am thrilled about the Fulcrum Press edition: when will it be due?'
- (6). [Tokyo], 18 May 1967 (postmark). Typed aerogramme. Refers to Guest's forthcoming 'slimmish volume' of poems, Arrangement (1968). 'All luck for Vancouver.'
- (7). [Tokyo], 17 October 1967 (postmark). Typed aerogramme. Returning to the UK in 'early summer' 1969. Letter incorporates poem ('The river skulks').
- (8). Tokyo, 14 April [1968]. Typed aerogramme. 'Thrilled' by Harwood's news of forthcoming appearance in Penguin Modern Poets, with 'Tommers' [Charles Tomlinson] and Alan Brownjohn (although, in fact, it proved to be Michael Hamburger instead of Harwood who appeared in this selection, PMP 14; Harwood eventually appeared with Ashbery and Raworth, PMP 19).
- (9). Tokyo, 12 May [1968]. Autograph letter (2 sheets), with envelope, enclosing printed article by Guest, 'The Language of Modern Poetry' (3 sheets, Japanese publication). The article quotes from 'prison tap' from The Man with Blue Eyes (the poem was not included in The White Room, nor in Collected Poems).
- (10). Tokyo, 9 July [1968]. Typed aerogramme. Guest has apparently mis-read 'prison tap' as a political poem, but still thinks 'it makes superb Koestlerish, Reg Butlerish sense if read as a political prisoner'. Guest is working on a series of six poems.
- (11). Tokyo, 21 March 1969. Typed letter (1 sheet), with envelope. 'We land at the end of April.' Hopes to go to New York in July and would like to meet John Ashbery.
- (12). Leatherhead, 29 May 1969 (postmark). Undated autograph postcard, signed 'Quilpington'.
- (13). Leatherhead, 10 May 1969 (postmark). Undated autograph letter (1 sheet), with envelope. 'Devoured "The White Room" in Betterbooks yesterday.'
- (14). Korea, [?July 1969]. Undated autograph postcard. Has written to Ashbery and still hoping to meet him in New York (suggesting a date for this postcard - see item 11 above).
- (15). Tokyo, 28 September 1969. Typed aerogramme.
