- Travel diary recording the daily activities of Samuel More during his visit to Alnwick at the invitation of the Duke of Northumberland. More describes the journey to Alnwick with the Duke of Northumberland including their stop at Buxton from 2-9 July where they visited local sights including Pools Hole Cavern, Mr Wedgewood’s works at Etruria, Chee Tor, Devils Arse Cavern and Lover’s Leap.Once at Alnwick, More records his progress in writing a description of the castle. He also describes his visits to the nursery grounds and plantations, to the nearby Hulne Abbey, to the local church, market, fair, to Bamburgh Castle, to Denwick Quarry, to Alnwick races and of the plays he saw performed. More also describes his journey back to London. Includes ‘A Letter Describing the Ride to Hulne Abbey in Northumberland’, note by Dr Percy, Bishop of Dromore on the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the reign of Henry VIII, note on the inscription on Tablet A, ‘Observations on the Barometer’ by D. Hastings, receipt for butcher’s meat from 30th July 1785, ‘Account of the Signals made Use of at Bamburgh Castle’, sketch of the canopy in Alnwick Church by J. Lambert for the architect John Bell, pamphlet to the members of the Musical Society intended to be established in Alnwick, Dr Price’s receipt for gold, inscription on the silver vessel, weight of the Blackwell ox and names of baronies paid at Alnwick.
