- Title:
- Lee Harwood: Letters Received (Sinclair - Sutherland)
- Scope & Content:
-
31 communications from Iain Sinclair, Peterjon Skelt, Piotr Sommer, Nikos Stangos, Glenn Storhaug, and Janet Sutherland.
- (1). Sinclair, Iain. London, 2 December 2001. Typed letter (1 sheet). 'I agree with you, a Welsh anthology is a good idea - but it doesn't look as if I'll be attempting anything just yet. As I got into it - and the original notion was prose as well as poetry - I realised how much material I wanted to include (I mean non-Welsh writers who have written about Wales).
- (2). Sinclair, Iain. London, 5 January 2004. Typed letter (1 sheet), with envelope. 'I should have written earlier, but I'd like your permission to quote a couple of lines from a letter (about hearing ships on the river, New Year, and thinking of the bombers coming over). This is for a novel, Dining on Stones, which comes out later this year (set partly along Thames, partly on south coast).' Small annotation by Harwood to bottom right corner of letter.
- (3). Sinclair, Iain. London, 29 January 2004. Typed letter (1 sheet), with envelope. 'Thanks for your gracious acceptance of a cameo - the letter - in my fiction.' Sinclair has 'started quietly to explore the coastal strip'.
- (4). Sinclair, Iain. London, 14 February 2005. Typed letter (1 sheet). Requesting contribution for London: City of Disappearances (2006). 'One of the mappings exploits Charing Cross Road (it's by Paul Buck). He talks about his time working for Better Books and mentions Bob Cobbing, yourself, Paul Selby. Which gave me the idea of using this journey as a way of cross-referencing other memory sets.'
- (5). Sinclair, Iain. London, 24 March 2005. Typed letter (1 sheet). 'Thank you for the two memory riffs, both useful.'
- (6). Sinclair, Iain. London, 2 August 2005. Typed letter (1 sheet). Requesting contributor's note for book.
- (7). Sinclair, Iain. London, 10 November 2005. Typed letter (1 sheet). A note on payment (including annotation by Harwood).
- (8). Sinclair, Iain. [London], 27 November 2005. Autograph postcard. Refers to exhibition at the Wapping Hydraulic Pumping Station.
- (9). Sinclair, Iain. [London], 30 November 2005. Autograph postcard. 'There is a section on the Wapping exhibition as an additional element in the DVD of "London Orbital", the film I made with Chris Petit.'
- (10). Sinclair, Iain. London, 5 January 2014. Autograph postcard. 'It was good to have your responses - as someone who knows so many of the characters - to "American Smoke" [...] It's really a novel in disguise.'
- (11). Skelt, Peterjon. Twickenham, 27 June 1996. Typed letter (2 sheets), with envelope. Refers to twenty letters from Eric Mottram to Harwood: 'I feel these letters belong in an archive and King's College should be the right place, but I will wait until the situation becomes clearer about what is going to be done about the EM archive. The legal documents are being prepared now.'
- (12). Skelt, Peterjon. Chorleywood, Rickmansworth, 1 June 2014. Typed letter (1 sheet), with envelope. Refers to the launch of Harwood, The Orchid Boat (22 May, Enitharmon Press, Bury Place, London). The letter incorporates a colour printed photograph (taken 24 August 1979) of Judith and Lee Harwood with their two young children.
- (13). Sommer, Piotr. Warsaw, 28 July 2004. Autograph postcard. 'I like the book immensely - have been reading your poems since April, when it arrived, with great admiration and understanding of what you have been doing, and marking the titles which I'd love to see translated into Polish.'
- (14). Stangos, Nikos. Penguin Books Ltd, Harmondsworth, 29 June 1971. Autograph postcard: 'a million thanks for sending me your beautiful First Poem' - i.e. The First Poem (Unicorn Bookshop, 1971) incorporating a drawing by Peter Bailey.
- (15). Stangos, Nikos. [London], 3 November 2002. Autograph postcard, with envelope, enclosing typed poem 'Closing In' (1 sheet). A 'late response' to Harwood, Morning Light (1998).
- (16). Stangos, Nikos. London, 20 December [2002]. Autograph folding card, with envelope. Stangos has 'decided, at long last, to quit publishing! I can't wait till the end of May when I leave T&H' [Thames & Hudson].

Thanks Harwood for his close reading of For Silver See Blue (Five Seasons Press, 2003). 'An elderly classical scholar sent a letter full of questions about the Greek/Minoan references, but no one else has asked about the Chief of Beijing/Peking Secret Police!!! I enclose a portrait of him [...].'
