- Title:
- Lee Harwood: Letters Received (Stevenson, Anne)
- Scope & Content:
-
37 communications from Anne Stevenson.
- (1). Durham, 14 January 2012. Typed letter (1 sheet). 'A word about the essay I gave you to read. I sent it to Michael Schmidt at PN Review. Like you, he agreed with a lot of it, but thought it too extreme, too opinionated, without enough examples given to support my polemic. Thinking it over myself, I have decided not to try to publish it. It can't do any good and will only make enemies; it was good for me to get my resentment of the prize-infected commercial poetry scene off my chest, but the only significant way to remedy matters is to write well oneself [....] So I will send the essay to my archivist in the Cambridge University Library and forget about it.' Harwood has read Stevenson's Astonishment (2012) in manuscript, the title poem of which (for Harry Guest) has still to be written.
