- Title:
- Catamarca [1920s-1940s]
- Scope & Content:
- Description: This envelope contains, first, information of the traditions of the province. Catamarca is an interesting mixture of the Native-American culture from the different ethnic groups-such as the calchaquíes-that lived in the region mainly under the Inca's influence. When the Spaniards arrived, they imposed a violent policy but the original culture of Catamarca survived and it is a fascinating example of intermarriage despite top-bottom coercion. A key example is the Virgin of the Valley (La Virgen the Valle) also known as La Morenita because of its dark features. This image was already worshipped by the original people and, in time, became a Catholic advocation of Virgin Mary. Second, this envelope deals with the squares In the city of Catamarca. Second, this envelope contains information on the squares that existed and exist in the city of Catamarca providing green spaces to the local landscape of rocks and mountains. Among the best known parks, we can find the Central Square, the square of the Virgin of the Valley, and the railways square among others. Extent and format of original material: A handmade envelope that contains two other envelopes encompassing the squares in the province of Catamarca alongside with the provinces traditions and culture.
