- Description: According to the experts, the Carnival of Buenos Aires boomed at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. Carnival troupes and comparsa became so famous that they always counted with a massive participation including the local elite and the authorities. The key to using costumes was veiling one’s identity and the carnival started at home with pranks and jokes. Then, the feast continued in the streets of Buenos Aires. The celebration soon incorporated the different ethnic groups in the neighbourhoods. The African-American population celebrated in San Telmo, the Italians in La Boca, the Jewish in South Palermo, and the Arabs in the Once, among other ethnicities. Eventually, the melting pot or the increasing cultural hybridisation created a new participation. Extent and format of original material: Nepaco folder with magazines' and newspapers' clippings.
