- Inválidos I [1940s-1960s]
- Scope & Content:
- Description: This Nepaco folder informs us about the situation of the disabled persons in the period under study. After the War of the Triple Alliance also known as the Paraguayan War (1864 to 1870 ), this is, when Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay declared war on Paraguay, the number of wounded and disabled soldiers was such that the Argentine hospitals proved not to be enough. Then, the Hospicio para los Inválidos (Hospice of the Invalids) was founded--still exists as the Rawson Hospital. But the sanitary and medical systems in Argentina were a consequence of the joined efforts of the civil society, the state, the church. The latter, however, was attacked by the anti-clericals and eventually the health system was centralized. In the early 1900s, law no. 9688/15 prevented and treated disabled men, women, and children who had been injured or sick due to professional reasons. With the arrival of the Welfare State the politics preventing illnesses or accidents as well as protecting the disabled persons became one of the most important pillars of these governments.
