- (1). Typed note (carbon, 1 sheet) to Bill [Butler], 25 April 1971, referring to the printing of the poem card The First Poem (Unicorn Bookshop, Brighton, 1971), together with the text in typescript (1 sheet, with pencil annotations).
- (2). Original buff folder entitled: 'MSS / Long Black Veil'. The folder has been re-used, other inscriptions struck-through. The following material (3-6 below) was originally placed within the folder (order undisturbed).
- (3). 'The long black veil: a diary(?)', title written on a strip of card originally retaining the material. Comprising 26 numbered poems, many dated (all 1970). Strip of card and 17 sheets, typed on two different typerwriters (and two paper sizes). Written in pencil at the head of the first sheet: 'These numbers [the numbering of the poems] only arbitrary, nothing to do with the final order.' The first poem begins: 'I have this now'.
- (4). 'Assembled 6-8 July '71 / pages from "The Long Black Veil"'. Typed text, 6 numbered sheets, with an additional sheet of notes following. Also, 4 sheets on which are typed quotations from Giorgio de Chirico, from Paul Valéry, and a brief quotation from a letter from Sandy Berrigan, and some draft lines referring to a film of Chekhov's The Three Sisters.
- (5). 'California Journal / Sunday 15 November to / Saturday 21 November 1970'. Assembled 30 July 1971 (pencil note at the foot of the first sheet). 7 sheets.
- (6). Various notes and drafts (order as found), including material in the hand of Bobbie Louise Hawkins (the addressee of 'The Long Black Veil') and some letters from Hawkins to Harwood.
