- Title:
- Lee Harwood: Notes on meeting Tristan Tzara
- Scope & Content:
-
A file of material originally retained together, comprising:
- (1). Autograph notes made by Harwood on visiting Tristan Tzara in Paris (4 November 1963) and Harwood's autograph account written up immediately after.
- (2). French newspaper and magazine cuttings (1964) following Tzara's death (25 December 1963).
- (3). Harwood, ['The Parable of Tristan Tzara and the Callow Youth'], as an untitled autograph draft and as typescript draft (2011). A subsequent account by Harwood of meeting Tzara based upon his notes (above) made at the time. Published in Poetry Wales, Vol. 47, No. 2 (Autumn 2011), pp. 25-9.
- (4). Brief notes (1 sheet with two small sheets attached) on a conversation with 'AG' [Allen Ginsberg] (London, 10 May 1965) which include a record of Ginsberg's comments on Tzara.
- (5). Cutting from an unidentified French publication of a poem by Tzara, 'Frère bois' (poem dated 31 December 1957); and a poem by Tzara ('De nos oiseaux') in typed English translation. A pencil note at the head of the sheet suggests that the translation might be by Michel Couturier, but a pencil note beneath the translation states: 'friend of Niel or Roger translated it'.
- (6). Typed card torn into two pieces with lines of reciprocal poetry on each half; autograph lines of poetry (1 sheet, beginning: 'A sun filled morning') headed 'Paris 11 June 65' (i.e. during Harwood's first visit to John Ashbery in Paris); notes (1 sheet) extracted from a 'letter to Mark Mildred, Lancing, 23/5/64'; brief autograph notes/poetry beginning 'The revolution is near O Prince' (cf. the ending of Harwood, 'Cable Street': 'O Prince your days are done / The Revolution's come'); four lines autograph draft poetry, beginning: 'at night the moon shines down'; three sheets headed 'Sword of ----- in the Lands of a Partition' which appear to be a draft translation (in autograph and incorporating a typescript section), original author not indicated.
