Two different string quartets, both designated No. 1, Op. 4:
- 1. ff. 1-26. String Quartet No. 1 ('No. 2' struck-through), Op. 4, in one movement. Copyist's score and parts, in black ink (bar lines to score in red ink). Dated on the title-page: 'March 20th 1937 / Revised 1939'. On p. 1 of the score, Arnell has noted: 'Not my handwriting except for some revisions'.
- 2. ff. 27-44. String Quartet No. 1, Op. 4. Dyeline copy of 4 autograph parts only. Stamped Hinrichsen Edition Ltd., London. Each part signed and dated in the original manuscript: New York 1939 (Violin I part records the dates as 25 October - 17 November 1939). For the original autograph score, see MS Mus. 223.
