The East Africa Geodetic Survey aimed to establish, by triangulation, a control network along the 30° East line of longitude in Tanganyika Territory. As such, it formed part of a larger survey along this meridian that extended the length of Africa from The Cape to Cairo.
Led by Major Martin Hotine (Royal Engineers), it was the intention to provide geodetic control along the meridian from 9° South to 1½° South. This was successfully achieved to 4½° South, where lack of funds forced the suspension of work. (The remaining northern portion was completed by the Tanganyikan Survey Department in 1936-37.)
