Sketch material, as follows:
- (1). ff. 1-12. 'Threes for Three', Op. 168. For flute, cello, piano. With a dated wrap-around sheet in Arnell's hand identifying the material: written notes (ff. 2-3) and sketch material in pencil and black ink (ff. 4-11). All dated 1991. One of the sheets of notes is written on the verso of a letter (1991) from Laurence Pollinger Ltd (Authors' Agents) regarding Powys, A Glastonbury Romance ('Perhaps you could write the music for the film').
- (2). ff. 13-37. Enclosed within an outer bifolium marked 'SYMPH 6 or 7 SK rough' (dated 1979-81): symphonic sketch material largely in pencil, including 1 f. in ink dated 1984. Together with sketch material for other compositions: 'Modified tune for The Land' (3 December 1979); material headed 'Ghost' and 'Geometric' scored for synthesiser; 'Interlude No. 7' (1985); and material relating to D.H. Lawrence (1985).
- (3). ff. 38-124. Sketch material marked 'Misc.' Amongst which, material headed: 'Sterility' (1987); 'Gesualdo + "Love"' (1987, Op. 159); 'Guinness' (1987); 'Mantra III' (April 1986); 'Aaron Copeland / 12 letters 4 syllables'; and 'Catherine's Piece' (August 1983).
- (4). Sketch material originally retained together marked 'Grades' (1985-93). Includes an autograph letter (10 December 1985) to Arnell, signed 'Simon'.
