Reading Collection: Viceregal Tour, 1923-24.

Quarter-leather album in red and black, 560x350mm, containing photographs, programmes, addresses of welcome, newspaper cuttings, menus, invitations and other memorabilia. Many of the photographs have typed captions. The album is in poor condition with the cloth detached from the binding and the prints mounted on brittle acid board. Despite this the prints appear to be in a fairly stable condition. The album records the tour of India and Burma undertaken by Lord Reading in 1923-24 and includes the following: Lahore Group portrait at Government House with the Viceroy and staff and Sir Edward Maclagan, Governor of the Punjab, Viceroy's arrival at Government House with Guard of Honour and armoured cars, opening of the High Court extension including a group portrait with Sir Shadi Lal, the Chief Justice; Patiala Military review with the Maharaja; Lucknow Lady Reading in a golden palanquin, the Viceroy with Sir William Marris, military inspection, state elephants; Allahabad Arrival at the Railway Station, 'mugger' shooting trip, Lady Reading at the Maternity & Child Welfare Centre; Udaipur Viceroy with the Maharana, topographical views; Chitor Viceroy visiting a temple; Bangalore Arrival and address of welcome, military review, garden party, Lady Reading at a hospital, group portrait including William Barton, the Resident of Mysore, flower show; Mysore View of the Durbar, Maharaja and the Viceroy hunting, views of Khedda operations; Madras Arrival at the Railway Station, procession to Government House with Lord Willingdon, Governor of Madras; Calcutta Viceroy visiting the Survey of India offices and examining a display of equipment used in the field, portrait with the Viceroy and Colonel Ryder, the Surveyor General; Rangoon Arrival on SS Arankola to be greeted by the Governor of Burma, Sir Harcourt Butler, procession, group portrait with the Governor, Viceroy and staff, large print of the Shwe Dagon Pagoda, addresses in the reception pandal, state barge, boat races, views at the horse racing including the grandstand and presenting trophies, garden party, dancing; Mandalay Group on horseback outside Government House, the old palace, garden party with dancers, throne in the old palace; SS Arankola Views of the interior, including living quarters, dining room and lounge; Delhi Views of Viceregal Lodge and grounds including the Royal Pavilion, guests at a garden party including Jinnah and his wife and other Indian notables, group portrait with the Viceroy and winners of the Polo Championship Cup, group with the Viceroy and his staff, two groups with the Viceroy and officers of the Governor-General's Bodyguard, view of the Jami Masjid during prayers, opening of the Central Legislature, Horse Show; Bharatpur Groups after a duck shoot at which more than three thousand birds were shot; Bhawalpur Investiture of the Nawab of Bhawalpur; Dehra Dun Hunting groups including Sir Frank Sly with tiger skins, hunting scenes; Shimla (Simla) King's Birthday Parade, Horse Show, interiors of Viceregal Lodge prepared for the 'Feast of Lanterns'; Srinagar Topographical views, Viceroy with the Maharaja of Kashmir, Shalimar Bagh, duck shoot, Dhal Lake.
