Elgin Collection: Album 'Presented to His Excellency the Earl of Elgin & Kincardine...as a Memento of His Excellency's Visit to the East Indian Railway Workshops at Jamalpur November 30th 1897'. Photographer(s): Elias, Basil J.
- Scope & Content:
-
Brown half-leather bound album measuring 305 x 410mm, with title as above on leather label laid down on front cover. Binding weak and front cover detached. Prints are mounted one to a page, with letterpress captions pasted beneath. The album contains 28 prints (numbered 1–24 to accommodate the five part panorama forming print 1), plus nine loose prints inserted at the end of the volume. Two of these (prints 25–26) relate to Lord Elgin's visit to Jamalpur, the remainder show unidentified scenes of bridge building and tunnels. The album contains exterior and interior views of the various workshops at Jamalpur, and architectural views of buildings in the town. A sheet of letterpress pasted onto the front free endpaper, gives a descriptive account of the growth of the town and the railway works.
Jamalpur, situates near the south bank of the Ganges some 300 miles north-west of Calcutta, was the headquarters of the Locomotive Department of the East Indian Railway. Established in 1862, by 1897 the works covered an area of 67 acres and employed 5,500 workers.
