Elgin Collection: The Tirah Expeditionary Force. Photographer(s): Bengal Sappers and Miners
- Scope & Content:
-
Dark green full leather bound album measuring 315 x 405 mm, with prints mounted on page with letterpress captions pasted beneath. The sixty prints in the album are a selection of some 291 photographs offered for sale in the catalogue issued by the Photo School of the Bengal Sappers and Miners at Rurki. A copy of this catalogue is inserted in the album.
The album documents military activity in Tirah in 1897–98 and includes topographical views and panoramas, camp scenes, group portraits of army officers and a few views of military actions. One of the several contemporary account of the campaign, Colonel H. D. Hutchinson's 'The Campaign in Tirah 1897–1898' (London, 1898), contains a good deal of information on many of the photographs and also has a number of maps pinpointing their location.
