Album: 'India. Scenery. 1874'. Photographer(s): Bourne, Samuel
- Scope & Content:
-
Maroon half-leather album, measuring 345 x 500 mm, containing 29 mounted albumen prints with handwritten captions. This is the first volume of a two-volume collection (see also Photo 28/2). The title is stamped in gilt on a red leather label laid down on the front cover; Roman numeral 'I' stamped on spine. It is possible that this album was bought directly from the Bourne and Shepherd studios as the binding is in similar style to other Bourne albums, such as Photo 94/4. A label on the inside front cover reads: 'Presented to the India Office Library by Miss Joan Gladstone, 25 August 1950'. The album contains mainly topographical views by Samuel Bourne of locations in northern India and in particular Simla and the Himalayas; there are also architectural views of monuments in Lahore and Amritsar. The prints are arranged geographically and each set of prints of a particular region has been given an overall heading as follows: prints 1-13 'Simla'; prints 14-23 'The Sutletz [sic for Sutlej], China [sic for Chini], Wanga Valley, etc'; prints 24-28 'Lahore, Umritsur, etc'; Print 29 'Kangra'.
