Palace of Shah Jehan [Diwan-i-Khas, Agra]. Photographer: Murray, John
- Scope & Content:
-
A photograph of the Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience) in Agra, from Murray Collection: 'Photographic views in Agra and its vicinity', taken by John Murray in the mid-1850s. The Diwan-i-Khas is one of the fort palaces built in 1637 by Shah Jahan (r.1628-58) and consists of an open colonnaded hall in front and an enclosure at the back. The building is of marble inlaid with carnelian, jasper and lapis lazuli arranged in floral patterns of pietra dura work. In front of the building is a terrace with two thrones, a black slate one on the riverside and a white marble one near the steps to the Macchi Bhavan (Fish Square), originally a water palace. The Taj Mahal, also built by Shah Jahan on the death of his favourite wife Arjumand Banu Begum, can be seen in the distance.
