Hallett Collection: 'Nayar Dam Project'. Photographer(s): Unknown
- Scope & Content:
-
Black buckram photograph album measuring 285x390mm, with title as above stamped in gold in bottom right-hand corner and prints mounted to a page. Prints 1-4 are uncaptioned, prints 5-8 have handwritten captions beneath each photograph. Inserted in the album is the Report of Committee to consider the future development of electric power in the United Provinces (Lucknow, 1944), which gives a brief account of the Nayar Project. A typescript note pasted inside the front cover reads as follows: 'Nayar Dam Project. The Report of the Committee appointed to consider the future development of Electric Power in the United Provinces contains details about the various schemes which the engineers of the Irrigation department worked out during the war years. One of the most interesting was the Nayar Dam project which was for the erection of a large dam on a trbutary of the Ganges in Garhwal district about 50 miles above Hardwar. The photographs show a visit which was paid to the site by me in order to meet a distinguished American engineer who had had considerable experience of the big irrigation works in the U.S.A. such as the Tennessee Valley project. He was very favourably impressed by his inspection of the site and thought the scheme was extremely promising; it would have made it possible to increase the amount of water available for the old Ganges canal as well as to develop a hydro-electric system. I have no information as to whether the present government of the U.P. have taken any steps to work out this plan'. Print 1-4 show groups inspecting the site, prints 5-8 are views of the Nayar or Nyar River Valley.
