Collection of loose print of various sizes, some on card mounts and the majority captioned in one form or another. The collection can be broken down into the following categories:
Prints 1-6 Views of the Port Blair area, prison settlement, barracks, etc, by Bourne & Shepherd, 1880s. Albumen prints. The prints are loosely mounted on card, with additional notes in Temple's hand.
Prints 7-15 Interior and exterior views of Government House, Port Blair, by Philip Klier, 1890s. Albumen prints. Prints mounted on card with additional notes in Temple's hand.
Prints 16-22 Miscellaneous prints, 1890s, by Rev. C. Low, Maurice Vidal Portman, Bourne & Shepherd. Albumen prints and platinum prints. Unidentified views, a volcano (probably Barren Island), etc.
Prints 23-96 Miscellaneous views in Andaman and Nicobar Islands 1890s-1900s, some by Maurice Vidal Portman, most photographers unidentified. Collodion prints and platinum prints. Loose unmounted prints, some captioned on the reverse, man uncaptioned. Includes landscapes in the Andamans and Nicobars, views of Government House, Port Blair, and a number of Portman's ethnographic studies of Andaman Islanders (these are duplicated in Photo 188).
Prints 97-126 Views taken on a panoramic camera in the early 1900s of scenes around Port Blair and in the Nicobar Islands. With accompanying handwritten list of captions.
Sir Richard Carnac Temple (1850-1931), Indian Army officer, administrator in Burma and the Andaman Islands and writer on anthropological subjects.
