Lieutenant Alfred Edward Sealy Collection: Chitral Campaign, 1895. Photographer(s): Develin
- Scope & Content:
-
Blue, cloth-covered album, 295x255mm, containing mounted prints with handwritten captions. The album is in poor condition: the binding is loose, the pages are very brittle and the prints have suffered water damage. A typed label on the inside front cover reads: 'Presented to the India Office Library by Group Captain C. F. Sealy, May 1963'. Adjacent to this is a modern handwriitten note: '[This album must have belonged to his father, Lt Alfred Edward Sealy, 4th Gurkhas, 2nd Bn, but would seem to have perhaps belonged to a fellow officer - Lt C. R. M. Hutchinson perhaps - for the scenes are of events pre-1896 when Sealy joined.]'. The photographs depict views taken at the time of the Chitral Campaign in 1895 showing the Relief Force of the 4th Gurkhas and also the 14th Sikhs, defenders of Chitral. Although the photographer is unknown there are similar views in Photo 169/3 which resemble those published by Develin in his Views in Chitral: taken during the Advance of the 3rd Brigade of the Chitral Relief Force... London c.1896.
