Photographs, mainly snapshots, taken by Miss Leslie Bell during a visit to Upper Burma in 1929-30. Subjects covered include: Kachin domestic life; an Anglo-Chinese Frontier meeting at Naungma; Irrawaddy flotilla steamer and passengers; bamboo bridge; modes of transport; Chinese workers making dahs in Bhamo; scenes from the teak industry including workers and elephants; muleteers; market scenes; a Kachin woman with goitre; a monastery and pagodas in Mandalay; local river craft; Indian Military Police; street vendors; general topographical views and scenes in Bolarum in India. The collection also includes a small envelope of One dozen Burma views. Photographic reproductions of Burman life and places of interest, made for the American Baptist Mission Press, Rangoon and Mandalay. Non-photographic material accompanying the collection consists of a copy of an article, 'In Upper Burma' by Leslie Bell, published in the 'Canadian Geographical Journal', Vol VI, No 5, May 1932, an essay by Graham Cathcart on 'Making a Burmese dah' and a war report by George H. Johnston in the 'Saturday Evening Post' (15 July 1944) about the Kachins fighting the Japanese.
