Brown half-leather album, measuring 368 mm x 480 mm, containing 51 mounted prints with handwritten captions; title stamped in gilt on front cover and with the photographer's address label pasted opposite Print 1. The prints depict buildings, railway lines, etc, destroyed or damaged in the earthquake that hit Eastern India in 1897. The photographs are of Calcutta, Darjeeling, Shillong, Gauhati and at various points on the Assam Bengal Railway and the Eastern Bengal State Railway.
Sir Alexander Mackenzie (1842-1902) entered the Indian Civil Service in 1862 and was appointed Chief Commissioner of Burma in 1890. From 1895-98 he served at Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal.
