Album of views of the Hong Kong and Macao Typhoon of 1874. Photographer(s): Lai Afong
- Scope & Content:
-
Green and maroon half-leather bound album (binding weak, spine piece and front cover detached) measuring 308x408mm. Prints, generally in good condition, are mounted on recto one to a page with descriptive letterpress captions pasted beneath. A letterpress sheet entitled 'The Typhoon of September, 1874' is laid down onto the verso of the front free endpaper and gives a detailed description of the storm which devastated Hong Kong, Macau and adjacent areas on the night of Tuesday 22 September 1874. As this introductory page declaims, the photographs form 'the largest, the most complete and most comprehensive series of photographs of the kind published, they convey an excellent idea of the effects of the typhoon'. This series of views is identified as the work of Lai Afong in Roberta Wue (et al.), 'Picturing Hong Kong. Photography 1855-1910' (Asia Society Galleries, New York, 1997, p. 99).
