Views in Hong Kong, Canton and Macao Photographer(s): N. L. Miller, (?)Afong (and others?)
- Scope & Content:
-
Black half-leather bound album (somewhat scuffed) measuring 322 x 440 mm, with prints mounted one to a page on recto. Descriptive letterpress caption labels are pasted on the page beneath each print. The differing lengths and typefaces of these captions may indicate the work of different photographers. Only one print, number 23, is signed in the negative (Miller Photographie No. 20), although the album may contain more of his work. The volume consists mainly of topographical and architectural views in Hong Kong, Macao and Canton, plus seven views at the end recording the devastation caused by the tornado that struck Canton on 11 April 1878. A letterpress sheet laid down at the back of the album describes the event. This is similar to the sheet present in Photo 337/2 documenting the Hong Kong Cyclone of September 1874 and these may well be the work of the same photographer. Print 42 is a loosely inserted photograph found with the collection.
