Zetland Collection: Album of views of Chinese Turkestan, Siberia and Mongolia Photographer(s): Zetland, 2nd Marquess of
- Scope & Content:
-
Brown half-leather bound album measuring 317 x 445 mm, containing prints mounted one to a page, with captions in Zetland's hand. This album records the Marquess of Zetland's 1903 Central Asian expedition and hunting trip and can be broken broken down geographically (although the captions are very general), into the following broad categories:
Prints 1-27 Views in the Tien Shan, Chinese Turkestan.
Prints 28-43 Views in the Siberian Altai.
Prints 44-58 Views in the Mongolian Altai.
Prints 59-70 Views in Siberia.
The contents of the album appear to cover two distinct areas. prints 1-28, taken in May-June 1903, relate to the area of the Tien Shan that falls in the present-day Chinese province of Xinjiang. The remaining prints, photographed in the Altai Mountains and moving between Siberia and Mongolia, seem to have been taken at the meeting point of the Mongolian, Russian and Chinese borders.
