Eight loose prints on various forms of card mount. Prints 1-7 are professional portraits of Sir Evelyn Howell at various stages of his life. Print 8 is a view of the Residency at Hyderabad, where Howell was First Assistant from 1908-10.
Sir Evelyn Berkeley Howell, the son of an ICS officer, was born in Calcutta, educated in England and himself joined the Indian Civil Service in 1900. He was appointed Political Assistant in the North-West Frontier Province in 1906 and became Deputy Commissioner in Kohat in 1910. From 1916-22 he served in the Middle East, working successively as Consul at Muscat (1916), Military Governor of Baghdad (1918) and Revenue Secretary, Mesopotamia (1918). He became Deputy Foreign Secretary, India in 1922, Resident in Waziristan from 1924-6, Resident in Kashmir from 1927-9, and Foreign Secretary to the Government of India from 1930-2. He retired in 1933.
