Sir Evelyn Howell Collection: Album of Indian views mainly in Kashmir, Peshawar and Pachmarhi. Photographer(s): Hands, H.
- Scope & Content:
-
Green half-leather album, 275x375mm, containing mounted prints with letterpress and handwritten captions. There is one loose print at the back. The album binding is in need of repair (at present the spine is held together by a paper support which is itself torn). A handwritten label on the front cover reads: 'My mother's book. Chiefly Kashmir, Peshawar & CP [Parachmarhi]. Curzon's Durbar at Delhi 1902-3'. The name 'Ernest Howell' is written opposite the first print and a portrait featuring 'Evelyn' and 'Self' (Print 57) suggests that this album was captioned by Evelyn Howell's brother. A newspaper article Across the Indian Frontier - The Valley and capital of Kashmir (Srinagar, September 1894) has been pasted inside the front cover. The photographs consist of topographical views at Simla, Murree, Baramula, Srinagar, Liddar Valley, Sonamarg, Bawan, Gulmarg, Peshawar, Pachmarhi and Delhi and several views of historical events.
Albumen and collodio-chloride (?) prints
W.H. Holmes, H. Hands and others unknown.;
