Photo 392/30

This collection of seven albums (containing 438 prints, numbered 1-419, plus duplicates) covers Stein's 1926 tour of Upper Swat in two sequences. Albums A.44-A.47 are larger formats prints, while albums A.48-A.50 cover the same period in smaller format photographs. Prints 385-419 from the same series are located with Photo 392/31. The tour is described by Stein in detail in two main sources: An Archaeological Tour in Upper Swat and Adjacent Hill Tracts (Memoirs of the Archaeological Survey of India No. 42, Calcutta, 1930), and a more popular account On Alexander's track to the Indus (Macmillan, London, 1929). Both of these works are extensively illustrated with Stein's photographs, and where prints have been reproduced this is noted in the catalogue. The A.S.I. Memoir also contains a detailed map of Upper Swat, incorporating Stein's surveys and marking his route. Locations of photographs corresponding to this map have been noted in the print listing, with grid reference.
