Scope & Content:

Collection of 166 duplicate negatives on modern safety film, made from nitrate originals now destroyed, 42 glass duplicate negatives (178-221) and 13 nitrate film negatives. This material, presumably photographed in England and probably not by Stein himself, forms the basis for most of the illustrations of artefacts in Stein's publications relating to his Iranian expeditions: reproductions from these photographs appear in his An Archaeological Tour in the Ancient Persis ('Iraq', vol. III, No. 2, 1936), Archaeological reconnaissances in North-Western India and South-Eastern Iran (London, 1937), Old Routes of Western Iran (London, 1940). Many of the photographs, however, do not appear to have been reproduced (see nos. 1-115).
