- (1). ff. 1-2. Two letters on Cheltenham International Festival of Music headed paper (20 August and 4 October 1991), inviting Arnell to write a new string quartet for the Cheltenham Festival (1992), in celebration of his 75th birthday. The letters appear to be from (signature obscure) Sir John Manduell, Festival Programme Director.
- (2). ff. 3-64. Pencil sketch material and working notes. Pencil sketch sheets dated 1992. Various working notes (1991-92) include the comment: 'Change Op. 157 to 170?'.
- (3). ff. 67-86. Autograph score (A4 photocopy reduction, pp. 1-19), with wrap-around sheet noting 'Score corrected June 4 1992'. The score has been copied from the original autograph score (see MS Mus. 228), with minor amendments to this photocopy in pencil and red ink. MS Mus. 228 has had white correction fluid applied to the opus number and to the date at the end of the work, changing the opus number from 157 to 170, and the date from 1988 to 1992. This photocopy was made, at least in part, before correction fluid was applied to the original score and is still indicating (p. 1) 'Opus 157'; however, the date at the end of the work, within the copy, is given as the revised date of '1992', suggesting that copies were made on more than one occasion. In this regard, note also that pp. 1-12 of the photocopy score are annotated at the foot 'R.A. 157', whereas pp. 13-18 are annotated 'R.A. 170'.
