Album of views of India and Ceylon Photographer(s): Nicholas and Company
- Scope & Content:
-
Album, originally measuring 264x390mm, now lacking covers, but with pages still bound at spine. Companion volume and in similar state to Photo 406/1. This album continues the documentation and covers Delhi, Lucknow, Benares, Calcutta, Darjeeling, Madras and Ceylon.
The majority of the prints are unsigned, apart from a few by Scowen & Co. and some Madras views that can be identified as the work of Nicholas & Co. Print 21, however, is reproduced in Montague Massey's Recollections of Calcutta for over half a century (Calcutta, 1918), and is there credited to Johnston & Hoffmann. It is likely that the other Calcutta views (prints 19-27) are also the work of that firm, and many of the captions are similar to views listed in the Johnston & Hoffmann catalogue. The Darjeeling views (prints 28-35), where Johnston & Hoffmann also maintained a studio, may also be the work of the firm.
