Curzon Collection: 'Gartok Expedition'. Photographer(s): Rawling, Cecil Godfrey

Maroon half-leather bound album measuring 185x245mm, with title as above stamped on front cover, and inscribed on verso of front free endpaper, 'Presented to His Excellency Lord Curzon. By Captain C.G. Rawling Somersetshire Light Infantry.' The album contains prints inserted one to a page in window mounts, with printed captions beneath. Captain Cecil Godfrey Rawling, who is presumed to be the photographer, led the 1904-5 expedition to establish a trade mart at Gartok (modern Garyarsa) at the conclusion of the Younghusband Expedition to Tibet. A good deal of survey work was also undertaken, and the album contains good quality amateur views of architecture and topography between Shigatse (Xigaze) and Gartok.
