P. V. Luke Collection: Album of Afghan War and other Indian photographs. Photographer(s): Bengal Sappers and Miners
- Scope & Content:
-
Maroon half leather bound album, album block detached from case, measuring 275x375mm. Most prints are mounted one to a page, with pencilled captions beneath. The contents of the album can be broadly broken as follows:
Prints 1-35 Second Afghan War scenes photographed by the Bengal Sappers & Miners. The majority of these images are duplicates of material in Photo 449/1.
Prints 36-51 Commercially produced topographical and architectural views at Gwalior, Agra, Cawnpore, Delhi, Lucknow and Rangoon, c.1870s-80s.
Prints 52-68 Studies of Gandharan sculpture from Sikri, Burmese wood carving, etc.
While Photo 449/1 and 2 were both received from the same source, it would appear that each album was compiled by different people. The albums themselves are in different styles, the duplication of material argues for two owners and the captions beneath the prints are in different hands.
