- Scope & Content:
-
Red half-leather bound album measuring 280x385mm, spine piece missing and covers loose and with considerable worm damage to boards (although prints on the whole are unaffected). The album contains two sequences of prints starting from each end of the volume and may have been compiled by an additional owner to Havell. Prints 1-38 Portraits of South Indian types and trades, with a few landscape views and some studies from Ceylon (Sri Lanka), 1870s-80s. Photographs by Nicholas & Co., W.H.L. Skeen & Co. (a few signed), the majority unknown.
Prints 39-56 Photographs of carved wood furniture, metalware and jewellery made at the Madras School of Arts, 1884-92, with pencilled captions in Ernest Havell's hand. Havell (1861-1934) was Superintendent of the Madras School of Arts during this period. The fixed endpaper of this half of the album is signed 'E. B. Havell c/o H. King & Co. 45 Pall Mall'.
Ernest Binfield Havell (1861-1934) served in the Indian Educational Service. He was Superintendent of the Madras School of Arts 1884-92 and Principal of the Calcutta School of Arts from 1896-1906.
