Letterpress description reads: 'There are in India twelve great seats of the worship of Siva and the Mahakal of Ujjain is one of the oldest and most famous. It attracts annually thousands of pilgrims from all parts of India and on the occasion of the Bathing Festival Simhastha which comes off once in twelve years, the number of pilgrims runs into lacs. The ancient temple fell a victim to the iconoclastic fanatacism of early Muhammadan invaders. The present temple which marks the site of the old one is an 18th century edifice, the work of a Brahmin Diwan of Ranoji Rao Scindia, the founder of the present Ruling dynasty of Gwalior. The precincts of the temple have been cleaned up and greatly improved in recent years'.
