Macnabb Collection (Sir Donald Campbell Macnabb): Album of miscellaneous views in India. Photographer(s): Baker and Burke
- Scope & Content:
-
Black and maroon half-leather 'scrap-book' album, measuring 350 x 440 mm, containing mounted prints with handwritten captions (five loose prints inserted at rear). Photographs include views and portraits at the Ambala Durbar 1869 and Mayo's visit to the N.W.F.P. in 1870; portraits of British officials and tribesmen; Gandharan sculpture fragments; portraits of D. C. Macnabb's children; European groups and bungalows; views in Murree, Kohat, Attock, Multan, Amritsar, Simla, Peshawar, Sind Valley, Srinagar, Martand, Abbottabad, Muzaffarabad, Hazara District (including survey group), Abu, Malot, Kasauli and Chamba. The series of prints of the Kagan district are probably the work of Henry Wood, dating from around 1867. The identity of the photographer of at least one of these views, print 119, 'A peep in the forest near Syfur Mulook Lake,' is confirmed by the duplicate at Photo 1143/1(42): in that album, the print is not so tightly cropped, and the inscription 'H. Wood 23.8.67' has been retained along the bottom edge. The other photographs in this series, in a similar style and often including the same European couple, suggests that all these photographs were taken by Wood during a trip, possibly related to surveying, in this area.
