Album of Indian views. Photographer(s): Mallitte, Oscar Jean Baptiste
- Scope & Content:
-
Brown half-leather bound album in very poor condition measuring 375 x 263 mm. The album has suffered a good deal during its lifetime and the binding is detached from the album block, while the cloth is partially separated from the boards. Several of the prints, originally loosely tipped down on four corners, are now detached and several have sustained damage through folding. The majority of the prints have brief pencilled captions beneath each image.
The album appears to have been compiled in two separate stages, prints on the verso of each leaf probably having been added after those on the recto, which for much of the album appear to be of earlier date. These earlier prints (ie those with odd numbers) show a series of views of Calcutta by Oscar Mallitte taken in the 1860s, followed by a series of views in the Jabalpur district and at Lucknow, dating probably from the 1860s-70s. All the prints on the verso of the leaves (prints with even numbers), apart from prints 52, 54, 56, 58, 60 and 62, are the work of the railway engineer and photographer V. Pont. These include a number of railway scenes (including accidents), as well as topographical and architectural views at Delhi, Agra and Parasnath Hill.
